The state tournament is all about constants. Los Alamos and Albuquerque Academy duke it out in the Class AAAA girls bracket, as do Carlsbad and Albuquerque Sandia in AAAAA. Albuquerque Academy dominates the AAAA boys scene, while Bosque School does the same in A-AAA girls.
So what are the Horsemen of St. Michael's doing in A-AAA boys? It has been the playground for Las Vegas Robertson and the New Mexico Military Institute, but not this year.
The Horsemen fired a shot across the bow of the two-time defending state champion Cardinals taking the District 2A-AAA title from the Cardinals on Friday. No other school had done that since the inception of five classes in 2000.
St. Michael's earned the top seed with the win, and avoids facing No. 3 NMMI in a semifinal matchup. That road now belongs to No. 2 Robertson.
