Highlands signs two local wrestling champs
New Mexico Highlands University will add two state champions to its wrestling program today, when Gerard Matthews of Capital and Travis Saxon of Santa Fe High sign national letters-of-intent with the NCAA Division II program.
Matthews, the 2008 Class AAAA state champion at
171 pounds, and Saxon, the 2007 Class AAAAA state champion at 160 pounds, are expected to sign their letters at 4 this afternoon in the school board room at Santa Fe Public Schools, 610 Alta Vista St.
Saxon injured his arm during the regular season and could not defend his title in February. For Matthews, the state championship was his first.
Lady Horsemen easily beat Raton
Kayla Herrera and Samantha McFall slugged two-run home runs, and Emily Schutz pitched a five-hitter as St. Michael's defeated Raton 10-0 in District 2AAA softball Monday in Raton.
Herrera finished 3-for-5 and McFall was 2-for-3. Both plated three runs.
Schutz (8-5) struck out five. She also went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.
Kendra Mitchell went 3-for-4 and Mariah Gonzales was 2-for-3 for St. Michael's (14-8, 8-4 2AAA).
Perry returns to coach at Utah
SALT LAKE CITY — The basketball coach at the College of Southern Idaho is a new assistant coach at Utah.
Barret Peery had an 85-19 record in three seasons at the Twin Falls, Idaho, junior college. He was coach of the year last season in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
Nearly two dozen of Peery's players have moved to NCAA Division I programs.
The Payson native played college ball at Southern Utah.
Rockies' Wells to have surgery
DENVER — Colorado Rockies right-hander Kip Wells will have surgery today for a blood clot in his right hand.
The Rockies said Monday the operation will be performed at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
The 31-year-old Wells was placed on the 15-day disabled list effective April 28. He
was 1-1 with a 2.29 ERA in 10 games and one start.
No date has been set for his return.
Chelsea beats Newcastle
NEWCASTLE, England — Chelsea sent the English Premier League title race to the final day of the season, beating Newcastle 2-0 Monday night on goals by Michael Ballack and Florent Malouda.
Manchester United (26-5-6) and Chelsea (25-3-9) each have 84 points with one game remaining, but Manchester United is far ahead on goal difference (plus-56 to plus-39), the first tiebreaker.
Manchester United, seeking its second straight league title and 10th in 16 seasons, plays at Wigan on Sunday.
In a match played simultaneously, Chelsea will play host to Bolton.
