Santafenewmexican.com is proud to offer you a chance to improve your neighborhood by reporting the problems you see - including potholes, broken streetlights and graffiti - on this site.

The New Mexican has partnered with seeclickfix.com in providing an interactive map that allows you to mark specifically where problems exist in Santa Fe. When reports are made, information from the report is automatically e-mailed to the city of Santa Fe's constituent services office where they can be assigned to the proper department.

You can preview the new feature atop this page or at santafenewmexican.com/reportit.

An idea born from storms

The idea to include this feature on Santafenewmexican.com came from interactions with readers this winter on snow days. Users of our live blog services had plenty to say about street conditions and potholes around town, but no central place to collect the information.

We at Santafenewmexican.com felt this provided the perfect opportunity to provide a reporting service such as seeclickfix on the site.

At least one other newspaper Web site in New Mexico uses seeclickfix for users to report problems as well as dozens across the country.

The success of this feature, like our live blogs, depends on you, the user, to provide updates to the issues you see.

It's not just for governments

We are happy to have the city of Santa Fe receiving updates on the reports posted to this new feature. We hope in the near future to enlist more agencies in this project. Those interested should e-mail webeditor@sfnewmexican.com.

The uses of this new feature aren't limited to government. Clubs, community groups, business and private residents can all use this tool to help improve a neighborhood.

Set up a "watch area" on the map and you'll receive e-mail alerts whenever someone make a report in your watch area. If you have a favorite park, designate it as you watch area by click the link on the map. When someone makes a report in that park, you'll see the report in your e-mail.

You can cancel these alerts at anytime. The alerts are free of charge.

Get your camera out

The best way to use this new feature is to get your camera out and document the problem you see. Take a picture of a broken streetlight and submit it with the nearest address so someone can fix it. Be specific with locations - you can't get made if your issue goes unresolved because the location isn't clear.

If you're an iPhone user, you can download an app from the app store. The app allows you to take pictures and upload them directly to seeclickfix.com, which in turn adds them to the local map.

We look forward to your participation in this newest project. Please feel free to leave a comment on this page or e-mail Web editor Henry M. Lopez.
