Update: The sheriff's department has confirmed the death of a driver in this crash but has not released the identity.
Four people have been hurt — two seriously — in head-on collision this morning on U.S. 285 south of Eldorado, Santa Fe County Undersheriff Robert Garcia said.
The crash occurred about 10:15 a.m. between Eldorado and Lamy Junction, Garcia said, adding that he was waiting for first-responders to report back to him with details. He said emergency personnel are currently unable to fly a helicopter to the site of the crash because of weather conditions.
Expect delays on that portion of U.S. 285.
The Sheriff's Office also investigated a sport-utility vehicle rollover earlier this morning on N.M. 14, though no one was injured in that crash, Garcia said. Otherwise, deputies have been busy dealing with several other incidents of cars sliding off the road thanks to the overnight snow storm, he said. None of those crashes involved serious injury, he said.
"The roads are nothing but a sheet of ice," Garcia said.
City police officers have responded to 10 or 11 crashes this morning already, said Santa Fe police Lt. Dale Lettenberger, though none involved serious injury.
State police briefly closed U.S. 285 near Arroyo Seco this morning because of icy conditions, said Peter Olson, a spokesman. However, the road soon reopened after sand trucks made it passable, he said. Officers also have been busy with other minor accidents, but nothing serious so far, Olson said.
