Gov. Bill Richardson has no military experience. He has said a deviated septum that caused breathing problems kept him out of the draft during the Vietnam War.

But Richardson has several experienced military men as campaign advisers.

Among them are a trio of retired generals who have been critical of the war in Iraq. These include:

• Retired Army Brig. Gen. John Johns, who campaigned with Richardson in New Hampshire last week and previously in Iowa. The Des Moines Register said Johns, a counterinsurgency expert who served in Vietnam, had previously backed Republican Sen. John McCain for president but now is supporting Richardson.

• Retired Army Lt. Gen. Robert Gard, who has been publicly critical of the Iraq war and has made public appearances with Johns to talk about Iraq.

• Retired four-star Gen. Volney Warner, another counterinsurgency expert and Iraq war critic. Warner lost a granddaughter in Afghanistan.

Richardson in news releases has said that retired Army Lt. Gen. William Odom — another outspoken war critic — supports his plan to quickly get all troops out of Iraq. However, a Richardson spokesman said Odom is not affiliated with the campaign.

Also advising Richardson is former Assistant Secretary of Defense Phillip Coyle — although Coyle also is advising other candidates, Richardson's spokesman said.
