How to get involved
Need to get a bike, fix a bike or ditch a bike? Chainbreaker Collective is the place to go, especially if you’re short on cash or want to help those who are.
Tucked between Ramblin’ Café and Le Flip Crepes and Coffee on Second Street, the shop is open from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.
Chainbreaker Collective is a community bike shop that operates on the mutual-aid system. In return for getting a free bike or bike parts, or lessons on how to tune up a bike, patrons donate their time, their money or something else, such as lumber or pastries.
Nobody is turned away. And nothing is bought or sold.
The bikes, for both adults and children, liberate people who otherwise couldn’t afford one and those who want to reduce their reliance on automobiles.
To support this group’s Reduce-Reuse-Revolt philosophy, here’s what to do:
- Donate a bike or bike parts.
- Donate tools, such as pin spanners, vices, bike stands, crank pullers, a welding machine, truing stands, chain breakers, wrenches, a headset press.
- Donate business supplies or expertise, to help with the Chainbreaker Collective’s Web site, brochures, grant writing and fund raising.
- Donate time to help repair bikes and organize the shop.
- Donate money, or help the collective find a less expensive building to rent.
