Bachelor's degree in psychology and education from Westmar College in Lemars, Iowa; master's degree in counseling psychology from New Mexico State University.

Political and government experience:
Santa Fe County Commissioner, 2002-present; Member of the Pojoaque Valley School Board for eight years; current member of National Association of Counties Board of Directors; co-founder of the National Hispano Community Prevention Network; member of the Santa Fe County Development Review Committee in 1994-1995.

Employment:
Currently chief executive officer of Hands Across Cultures Corp., an Española-based substance-abuse program he co-founded in 1995.

Previous work experience: Three years as a drug- and alcohol-prevention coordinator for the state Department of Health; two years as executive director of mental-health services at Presbyterian Medical Services; two years as Piñon Hills Hospital clinical director of chemical dependency; four years as executive director of Los Alamos Citizens Against Substance Abuse.
