Want a scooter? How about a fabulous trip to the Bahamas? What about a chance to bid on exquisite art by nationally known artists? Maybe you just want to homeless animals.
Donations for great prizes and auction items continue to pour in for next Sunday's Used Pets fundraiser, organizers say — all that's missing is a great turnout.
The 3 p.m. event July 18 at Chalk Farm Gallery, 729 Canyon Road, features live music, live and silent auctions, animal adoptions and on-site portrait painters. Tickets are $20, or $60 for VIP admission. Tickets are available at the gallery, or online at
www.usedpets.net.
Organizers have collected an interesting array of items for a raffle and the auctions, including two cruises — one for the raffle and another for an auction. Other auction items include a scooter and artwork by John Axton and Neito from Ventanta Gallery, Elias Rivera from Riva Yares Gallery, Stephen Day and Heather Foster from Peterson-Cody Gallery and Vic Lee from Chalk Farm Gallery.
Suhana Gibson, owner of Chalk Farm Gallery, is hosting the event.
Adoptable pets — dogs and rabbits — will be included in the mix, with some canines mixing in with a fashion show. The dogs, from Dew Paws rescue group, and the rabbits, from the Albuquerque branch of the House Rabbit Society, add a critter element to the fundraiser, which supports the creation of an animal rescue group and resource center near Pecos.
Used Pets has been a viable rescue group in Southern California for nearly a dozen years, rescuing thousands of dogs from off the streets. A group of dedicated Santa Fe residents hope to raise funds and relocate the founder, Cate Koetter, to an animal sanctuary in Northern New Mexico.
The core group — Dr. Iris Loesel, Mark Little and Skye White — has their heart set on a 105-acre parcel near Pecos, forested land with a stream running through it. They envision creating the sanctuary there, then developing the property to be self-sustaining, through end-of-life care for elderly animals and a memorial gardens.
The group sees the sanctuary as a resource center for all animal-welfare groups, where the groups can get relief and help in streamlining services. Long-term goals include providing veterinary care, humane education and spay and neuter programs.
