Six months after American Eagle started flying regional jets into Santa Fe Municipal Airport, the carrier announced Monday that it will add its third nonstop daily link between the local airport and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
The expansion will improve connections with American Airlines' hub at DFW by offering an evening flight into Santa Fe plus a morning outbound flight from Santa Fe to DFW.
The existing schedule offers only midday and afternoon departures each way.
"These are actually the flights we really wanted," Jim Montman, Santa Fe Municipal Airport general manager, said of Monday's announcement. "We've felt they would be the most convenient for Santa Fe travelers. It allows them to get out of town at a reasonable time and make great connections at DFW and then go anywhere."
The new flight into Santa Fe allows travelers to get back to Santa Fe without having to spend the night in Dallas, he added. "That's gone away."
The new flight, using 44-seat Embraer aircraft, is scheduled to start Feb. 11.
The evening departure from DFW will leave at 7:40 p.m. and arrive in Santa Fe at 8:30 p.m. The aircraft will overnight in Santa Fe and depart the next morning at 8:15 a.m., arriving DFW at 10:55 a.m.
Montman said many travelers have said they wanted a later flight into Santa Fe and an earlier one out in the morning. "I think these will be our most popular flights," he said.
The new flight also means American Eagle flight crews will need to spend the night in Santa Fe after arriving from DFW, Montman explained. That will benefit Santa Fe hotels and restaurants.
Santa Fe is also served by a daily nonstop American Eagle connection with Los Angeles. The LAX flights started Nov. 19, the same day American Eagle started its second flight to and from DFW.
Regarding the airline's latest expansion here, Gov. Bill Richardson said in a statement, "This new flight will make it easier for New Mexicans to travel and increase accessibility for those traveling to Northern New Mexico."
