A variety of activities will mark the Memorial Day weekend in the Santa Fe area.

On Monday, Memorial Day, a 10:30 a.m. flyover by the New Mexico Air National Guard is scheduled to kick off ceremonies at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

After opening remarks by the cemetery's acting director, Joseph Lovato, program support assistant Ezequiel Acevedo will take over as master of ceremonies.

Sgt. Sheryl Curry from Kirtland Air Force Base will sing the national anthem. The deputy adjutant general of the New Mexico National Guard, Col. Jack Fox, will be the guest speaker.

"I will be talking about the purpose of Memorial Day," Fox said, "and that we are gathered there not to glorify war but to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice that others could not or would not do."

On the Plaza on Monday, Veterans for Peace is sponsoring a daylong event to honor U.S. servicemen and servicewomen who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan and those who grieve for them. The event features the Iraq/Afghanistan Memorial Installation, a series of banners with the names, faces and brief military biographies of those who were killed.

In addition, Eyes Wide Open, a project of the America Friends Service Committee, will feature military boots representing the New Mexico dead and civilian shoes symbolizing the deaths of many Iraqis.

Speakers will address spiritual perspectives at 2 p.m., and individuals may proceed in a group afterward to Santa Fe National Cemetery to pay their respects.

At 7:30 p.m., a film, Body of War, about a paralyzed but active Iraq veteran, will be shown at the Center for Contemporary Arts, 1050 Old Pecos Trail.

In Pecos, the National Moment of Remembrance will be observed 3 p.m. Monday at the E.E. Fogelson Visitor Center of Pecos National Historical Park. It will be accompanied by a flag-raising ceremony by Pecos American Legion Post 70.

Memorial Day ceremonies at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park in Angel Fire start 10 a.m. today with a guided tour of the grounds and include a talk at the Huey helicopter on display there.

On Sunday, a Veterans Heritage Walk will be held at 8:30 a.m., Veterans Heritage speakers will be at 2 p.m. and a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m.

On Memorial Day, a flag walk at 9 a.m. will run from N.M. 434 to the park on U.S. 64. The Memorial Day ceremony begins at 11 a.m.
