Lilly Ledbetter, the woman responsible for passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, will be in New Mexico Oct. 21 and Oct. 22, according to Mary Stramel, president of Professional Business Women of New Mexico.
Ledbetter's pay discrimination case against Goodyear & Tire Rubber Co. went before the U.S. Supreme Court and ultimately led to congressional passage of a bill that amended the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The amendment stated that the 180-day statute of limitations for filing an equal-pay lawsuit regarding pay discrimination resets with each new discriminatory paycheck.
