Community organizations are pitching in to help Las Conchas Fire evacuees.

Food Depot executive Director Sherry Hooper said the organization already has distributed food baskets to evacuees who are staying with friends and relatives. And in order to secure enough nonperishables, the Food Depot is working with the city of Santa Fe, which on Tuesday made room for food bins in 10 locations, including City Hall, the libraries and the police department.

The Food Depot needs nonperishables and toiletries, but no clothing or household items, Hooper said.

Joyce Bond, the city's spokeswoman, said as long as fire evacuees show proof of residence, they will have complete access to the Genoveva Chavez Community Center, Fort Marcy Recreation Complex and the Salvador Perez Pool.

Solace Crisis Treatment Center Board President Ray Lopez said that center also is willing to open as a shelter, which can house up to 20 people, including children.

Tony McCarty, Kitchen Angels executive director, said her group is ready to feed evacuees. During the Cerro Grande Fire, Kitchen Angels delivered food to evacuees staying at local hotels, McCarty said.

"We anticipate that we'll get some calls. We're ready," McCarty said.

Mona Romero, supervisor and cook at San Martin de Porres Soup Kitchen in Española, said the center has not had any evacuees.

"They are more than welcomed. We're open from 11:30 a.m. to noon for lunch Monday through Friday," Romero said as she took a break Tuesday from feeding the needy a spaghetti, green beans and garlic bread lunch. On any day, the soup kitchen feeds 70 to 100 people, she said.
