The following events are planned for area faith communities this weekend and in the coming weeks:


Hospital merger

At the 9:45 a.m. Sunday forum at United Church of Santa Fe, Dr. Kevin Garrent, the chief medical officer of St. Vincent's Regional Medical Center and Robert Glick, executive director of the St. Vincent's Foundation, will be the guest presenters. They will speak on the proposed merger between the medical center and
Christus Health company.

A second forum, "Saving Jesus," is a DVD series with a progressive approach to
Christianity.

Deeksha

From 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Santa Fe Community Yoga Center at 826 Camino del Monte Rey will host a Oneness Blessing Deeksha.

Kabbalah groups

The Santa Fe Kabbalah Study Groups welcome anyone interested in the study of Kabbalah.

  • The Advanced Group will meet on Thursday to discuss the mystery of immanence and transcendence that form the basis of the Kabbalistic view of the universe.
  •  The Beginning Group will meet on Feb. 21 to study the sefirah of Tiferet and its relationship to the various triads and seferot on the lower face of the Tree of Life.

Hearken and heed

Sunday services at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints begin at 10 a.m. with the Sacrament Meeting, followed at 11 a.m. by Sunday School. This Sunday, the Priesthood and the Relief Society meet at noon and will focus on "God the Eternal Father," Lesson No. 2. The Gospel Doctrine Class will discuss "Hearken to the Truth and Give Heed Unto It," Lesson No. 5. The Gospel Essentials Class will focus on "The Law of Chastity" Lesson No. 39. Love service

At 8:45 a.m. on Sunday at the Santa Fe Center for Spiritual Living, a meditation service begins, led by practitioner Rhonda Main.

At 10 a.m., in preparation for the service, Kelvin McNeal and the center's music staff will lead the congregation in inspirational chants.

At the 10:15 a.m. Sunday service, the Rev. Bernardo Monserrat will discuss "Love is Coming." At the end of service, there will be a Renewal of Vows ceremony. Sunday's special music performance will be offered by singer, songwriter Stephen Pike, who specializes in music that promotes a harmonious balancing on mind, body and Spirit.

The youth program begins at 10:15 a.m.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays, spiritual coaching takes place. A suggested donation for the class is $5-$10.

Liturgy

The Rev. Kenneth Semon will preach at the 8:30 and 11 a.m. Sunday Holy Eucharist services at the Church of the Holy Faith Episcopal.

Nurseries are provided from 8:15 through the
11 a.m. service. Fellowship, refreshments and study begin at 10 a.m. in Palen Hall. Coffee and cookies are served after the 11 a.m. service in Palen Hall.

At the 10 a.m. Sunday forum, Semon will begin a series on the "Liturgy of Lent and Holy Week."

Children's Sunday School classes meet on the second floor of Conkey House.

  • At 6 p.m. on Tuesdays in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd, the church offers a service of healing with Holy Eucharist for body, mind and spirit.

Envy

The Rev. Scott Penrod discusses "Blue with Envy" at both the 8:30 and 11 a.m. Sunday services at St. John's United Methodist Church. The text reflects the parable about the workers being paid the same wages — for one hour's work and a full day's work. At 9:30 a.m., fellowship with coffee and light refreshments will be served. At 10 a.m., adult, youth, and children's classes are held.

Other events at the church are:

  • At 6:15 p.m. in the parlor, the Wednesday Community group meets to discuss questions of faith. Bob Slusser, scientist and ordained minister, leads the discussion on many topics, including creation, life after death, the devil and more.
  • From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, the Giant Rummage Sale sponsored by St. John's United Methodist Women, will benefit church missions. The proceeds also will fund new clothing for adults at the Española Valley Amigos de Valle program.
  • At 7 p.m. today, the Trinity Choir and Chamber Singers of Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas, will present a concert at the church. The concert is free and open to the public. Principals

At the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos, the Rev. John Cullinan will discuss "Our Principles IV: Individuality and Interdependence."

At 11:45 a.m., the Building Our Future Task Force will hold the second of a series of mini-town hall meetings.

Religious-exploration classes and forum discussions begin at 9:30 a.m.

Welcome brunch

At the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service at First Presbyterian Church, there will be a worship service with Communion. The Rev. Terry Purvis-Smith will preach. Education classes will not be held this Sunday. Instead, the congregation will host a brunch in Pope Hall to welcome Purvis-Smith and his wife, Virginia. The education classes will resume at 10:45 a.m. on Feb. 17. The new series will be "The Spirituality of the Psalms with Anne Noss and How the Organ Makes Music with Linda Raney. The church is at

Eternal light

Congregation Beit Tikva, sharing Jewish values in the Reform tradition, holds Shabbat services at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays.

Santa Fe Quakers welcome all people to the Quaker meetings for worship. Women's Circle

This year, 5768 on the Jewish calendar, the Jewish Women's Circle at Chabad Jewish Center of Santa Fe invites women to gather together to share and celebrate the Jewish experiences of study, understanding, friendship, creativity and kinship through studying the 10 Sefirot and performing Mitzvot. At the 6:30 p.m. meeting on Wednesday, Tiferet will be the focus. It represents compassion, beauty and modesty — a person's best side. Professional photographer Caylah (Cathy) Callanan will show those who attend how to find their best side, experiment with angles and shading and select the colors that are best suited for each individual.

Kabbalah course

The Kabbalah Society and Temple Beth Shalom will present Z'ev ben Shimon Halevi — the Hebrew name for Warren Kenton — and a course on the "The Ancient Tradition of Kabbalah." Halevi is one of the foremost teachers and writers on Kabbalah. The course will be offered on March 29 at the temple, 205 E. Barcelona Road. The course will be held in three sessions:

  • From 1:15 to 3 p.m., the teaching will be on the myths and history of Kabbalah.
  •  From 3:45 to 5:30 p.m., the hierarchy of the four universes and the angelic, demonic and human inhabitants will be discussed.
  • From 7:30 to 9 p.m., Kabbalistic psychology and its function will be the topic.

Each session will end with a question-and-answer period.

Lady of sorrows

The Adult Enrichment Committee is sponsoring a program on "Images of Our Lady of Sorrows" at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. The program is free and open to the public. It will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 28 in Crispin Hall on the cathedral grounds, 131 Cathedral Place. Bonnie Hardwick will be the facilitator.

Upaya offerings

Upaya Zen Center at 1404 Cerro Gordo Road, offers the following programs for the community:

10:45 a.m. on Sundays. The presentations are free and open to the public. Upcoming presentations include:

  • Today and Sunday: "Sustaining Our Relationship With God."
  • Feb. 23 and 24: "Preserving Our History for Future Generations."
  • March 8 and 9: "Unmasking Depression and other Mental Illnesses."

Abundance

At the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service of The Celebration, Chrstine Warren will discuss "Divine Abundance." The church meets at the National Education Association Building, 2007 Botulph Road. The service is filled with music, a reading, meditation and a talk by a member of the congregation or a guest speaker. The Celebration is a joyful gathering that honors all paths and celebrates life. Latin service

At 2 p.m. on Sundays, the Rev. Arthur Jakobiak celebrates Mass in Latin at the San Miguel Mission, 401 Old Santa Fe Trail. The Mass is supported by the Latin Mass Community of Santa Fe and is approved by Archbishop Michael
J. Sheehan and the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. Sunday Mass is celebrated in the traditional liturgy at 5 p.m. at the Mission.

At Temple Beth Shalom

Temple Beth Shalom, the only liberal, nationally affiliated Reform Jewish community in Northern New Mexico, also offers adult education program:

  • At 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Alan Brody and Marcelle Grant will facilitate their monthly parsha discussion.
  • From 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, the Jewish Literature class will meet. The Book selection is Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky.
  •  From 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, The Kabbalistic Tree of Life, with Steve Russell and Simma Kinderlehrer will be held in the Social Hall. Cost is $5.
  •  From 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, the Santa Fe Jewish Christian Dialogue presents "Hagar & Sarah." Rabbi Ben Morrow and the Rev. Aurelia T. Fule will discuss the lessons found in this Biblical Midrashic text.

  • From 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 16, "Inner Meaning of Consecration of the Sanctuary: A Chant-Centered Program of Heart Exploration in the Jewish Tradition" will be led by Dana Densmore and Howard Fisher.
  • At 7 p.m. on Feb. 24, the Israeli film Turn Left at the End of the World will be shown. Refreshments will be served. The cost is $5.
  • At 7 p.m. on Feb. 28, Nir Arieli and his aunt, Revital Wata Arieli, will present a photo exhibit and talk on "The Israeli Military, Now & Then." Nir has just completed his service as a military photographer for Israeli Military Magazine; Revital did her military duty more than 20 years ago. Both will offer their first-hand look at Israel's changing society. The cost is $5.
  • Rabbi Jonah Pesner will be scholar in residence at the Temple Feb. 29-March 3. At 7:30 on Feb. 29, he will lead an interactive sermon, "Moving from Individual Passion to Congregational Action." On March 1, following a Shabbat lunch and musical interlude, Pesner's presentation will lay the groundwork for roundtable discussion.

Apocalypse archetype

From 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, James Jordan will present a free lecture titled "The Apocalypse Archetype: A Jungian Psychological Perspective."

Jordan, assistant professor of psychology at the College of Santa Fe, is offering this lecture in Tipton Hall as part of the college's ongoing faculty lecture series.

The lecture will give a pictorial overview of the archetype, and how it has manifested in several cultures — the Hopi, Mayan, Judeo-Christian and Muslim. Jordan also will discuss the Mayan's end of the present cycle dated Dec. 21, 2012. Is this the end of the world or a pivatal point in the evolution of combined consciousness?

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Chance to quit

The Southwest Seventh Day Adventist Church is conducting Quit Now — a worldwide 7-day smoking-cessation program.

This is not a religious program but a stop-smoking program.

"Transformation and Totality: The Basics of Buddhist Trantra" is the title of the second part of the study being offered from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Sundays Feb. 17 through March 16 at Thubten Norbu Ling Buddhist Center.   • From 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays through April 30, teacher Don Handrick offers a course called Mahayana Mind Training — The Wheel of Sharp Weapons will be offered.
  • From 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, the Heart of Practice, a weekly series of classes consisting of videos and teachings to provide additional support for integrating the Buddha's teachings into daily life. The suggested donation per class is $15.

Lil' Rev

At 7 p.m. on Monday, "Rise Up Singing," an acoustic evening of Jewish and Yiddish Folk songs with Lil' Rev, will be held at Chabad Jewish Center of Santa Fe.

Lil' Rev, Wisconsin's award-winning Jewish folk singer and storyteller, performs on six different instruments. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children. Light refreshments will be served.
