More event at area faith communities this week:

Songwriting workshop

Sunday at the Santa Fe Center for Spiritual Living, the 8:45 a.m. meditation service will take place. The Celebrations Service begins at 10:15 a.m. The Rev. Bernardo Monserrat will discuss "Prayer: Active and Passive Prayer." Singer, songwriter Steve Altermatt will be the guest musician at the service.

From June 16 through 19, a songwriting workshop will be held at the center. Two sessions are available — from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or from 6 to 9 p.m. daily. Singer, songwriter Lisa J. Carman and the center's music director and composer Kelvin McNeal will facilitate the workshop. A performance on June 20 at Body of Santa Fe will conclude the workshop. Pained no more

Sunday services at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints begin at 10 a.m. with Sacrament meeting, followed at 11 a.m. with Sunday School. The Priesthood and the Relief Society meet at noon. The class will discuss "Prayer and Personal Revelation," Lesson No. 10. The Gospel Doctrine Class will discuss "My Soul is Pained No More," Lesson No. 20. The church is at 410 Rodeo Road. Ordination
Holy Trinity Orthodox Church will be celebrating the visit of Bishop Basil and the ordination of Daniel Bethancourt to the priesthood.

Daniel Bethancourt, the son of congregation's pastor, the Rev. John Bethancourt, will be ordained a deacon at 9:30 a.m. today. At 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, he will be ordained to the priesthood. A reception lunch and celebration will follow the liturgy on both days.

Daniel Bethancourt is a graduate of St. John's College. He graduated from St. Vladimir Seminary in 2007. He and his wife, Maria, are expecting their first child in August. He have been assigned to St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Shreveport, La. The couple will take up their post there later this month.

Brunch

Sunday at Immanual Lutheran Church will feature liturgical worship and favorite music at
9 a.m. with a special June brunch at 10:30 a.m. Call 983-7568 if you want to attend the brunch.

Two cultures

Summer services at the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos begin at 10 a.m. on Sundays. This Sunday, Don Neeper discusses "Conservative and Liberal — Two Cultures in One America?"

Farewell

At the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services at St. John's United Methodist Church, the Rev. Stephanie Harmon will preach her farewell sermon. Harmon and her family will be honored with a reception between services. The Harmons will be moving to Roswell where Harmon will be associate pastor at First United Methodist Church. Torture and justice

June is Torture Awareness Month and Temple Beth Shalom, along with more than 175 religious organizations, has joined the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, "Banners Across America," to bring the anti-torture message to congregations and communities. A banner declaring "Honor the Image of God: Stop Torture Now" is displayed on the façade of the temple.

June also is the month for justice and representatives of four agencies that provide much needed services in the community will be speaking at TBS in June.

  •  On June 13, Andrea Fisher Maril, chief executive officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern New Mexico, will discuss the difference "Bigs" make in the lives of children.

God in the margins

The Rev. Anne Morawski will be the guest preacher at the 8 and 10 a.m. Sunday services at Christ Lutheran Church. She will discuss how God continues to be made known through those on the margins of society, like Matthew the tax collector. She is Lutheran campus pastor at The University of New Mexico.

At TaHa Mosque

The TaHa Mosque in Santa Fe holds weekly services at 1 p.m. on Fridays. This Friday, the sermon will continue on the purification of the heart. A talk will be centered around verses from the Koran on how to overcome the lower self "ego" and enhance the higher self "the soul that dwells in tranquility." The mosque offers the five-daily prayers including Fajr — morning prayer — and Maghrib — evening prayer — and Koran recitations. Adult and children classes are held at 11 a.m. on Saturdays. Opera apprentice

At the 9 a.m. Sunday service at Lutheran Church of the Servant, Pastor Sonnie Eriksen-Fish will preside at the celebration of the Lord's Supper. No adult lectionary classes will be held until September.
  • Starting Sunday, an apprentice singer from the Santa Fe Opera will perform each Sunday. This Sunday, baritone Chad Sloan will perform.

Holy Family

At the 9:30 a.m. Sunday forum, the participants at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Family will discuss "Where Do We Go From Here?" The 10:30 a.m, the Rev. Tom Woodward will be the celebrant at the Holy Eucharist service.

Following the service, there will be a potluck meal and a meeting of the Bishop's Committee.
