Foundation hands out $75,000 in grants


The Las Campanas Community Fund at the Santa Fe Community Foundation awarded $75,000 in grants to local nonprofits earlier this month.

The fund received 133 requests, according to fund chairwoman Patricia McFate.

The recipients include:

• Animal Protection of New Mexico to promote the humane treatment of all animals.

• Assistance Dogs of the West to provide youth with behavioral skills through hands-on responsibility, training and management of an assistance dog.

• Big Brothers/Big Sisters Northern New Mexico for professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships.

• Breakthrough Santa Fe to buy curriculum for middle-school students.

• CASA, First Judicial District to recruit, train and support volunteers to advocate for the interests of children in foster care.

• Esperanza Shelter for insurance for vehicles used to transport shelter clients.

• Friends Forever Foundation to replenish the Family Emergency Fund to assist seriously ill, abused and homeless children.

• La Familia Medical Center for comprehensive medical, dental and health education services.

• Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe for neighborhood and community tutoring programs for people who want to read, write and speak English.

• Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society to prevent animal cruelty and promote education.

• Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival to support opportunities for children to attend chamber music performances and learn how to play the violin.

• Santa Fe Community Foundation to provide five Piñon Awards that go directly to nonprofits.

• Santa Fe Rape Crisis and Trauma Treatment Center for its anti-oppression curriculum for middle and high schools, with special attention to homophobia and prevention of hate violence.

• Southwestern Association for Indian Arts to create programs to encourage economic and cultural opportunities for Native American artists.

• St. Elizabeth Shelter to help the homeless lead more productive, stable and satisfying lives.

• St. Vincent Hospital Foundation for the Healthcare Exploration Program, where students can explore health care careers.

• The Food Depot to collect and distribute food to hungry people.

• Trust for Public Land to support the Santa Fe Railyard Park and Plaza construction and stewardship.
