Feb. 23, 1962: Ambrosia Chavez, new head of an organization of rental-property owners opposed to public housing here, Wednesday night offered to donate 80 acres outside the city to replace four proposed development sites inside the city. One unidentified property owner at the organizational meeting argued that the group take its fight to the highest authorities possible. The offer of the land came after Chavez was elected during a meeting of some 55 property owners called together at the Alvord School by property owner Carlos Rael who was named vice president of the opposition group.
Feb. 23, 1987: Las Cruces -- Geothermal greenhouses could be a budding industry in Southern New Mexico. A greenhouse research facility at New Mexico State University uses geothermal energy to cut costs. Pat Wing, media coordinator for the New Mexico Solar Energy Institute, said the greenhouse is a demonstration project "to help growers see the value of using geothermal energy available in Southern New Mexico in establishing efficient greenhouse operations."
