July 3, 1909: The executive committee of the Board of Trustees of the New Mexico Museum has been in session several times this week considering plans for the immediate preparation of the Old Palace for museum purposes. Prof. Jesse R. Nusbaum has already established his photography studio and offices in the building.

July 3, 1959: Every tourist who enters New Mexico on two major highways during the 4th of July weekend will get a personal explanation and warning of the state's soaring traffic fatality toll. State Police Chief A.P. Winston Jr. announced the establishment of courtesy check points starting at dawn Friday at Anthony and Lordsburg on U.S. 80 and at San Jon and Gallup on U.S. 66. He said various state departments would cooperate in stopping all non-resident traffic at those points during the next three days.

City Clerk-Treasurer Marion Sebastian was named early today as acting city manager for Santa Fe. Sebastian was appointed by Mayor Leo T. Murphy to fill the post left vacant by the sudden death of Howard Ashbaugh last week.

July 3, 1984: Illegal fireworks apparently are invading Santa Fe again this year, causing hot tempers in sleepy-eyed residents in the middle of the night and tying up the emergency 911 hotline with demands that pranksters be given citations. Santa Fe Police Chief Andrew Leyba said city police officers are issuing citations for the misdemeanor offense of setting off illegal fireworks within the city limits if and when they catch pranksters red-handed.
