July 2, 1959: Howard Ashbaugh, 53, Santa Fe city manager, died suddenly shortly before noon today after suffering a massive cerebral hemorrhage while at work. He had appeared to have been in perfect health.

The space age will have its effect on the Lions Club Fourth of July fireworks shot at Fort Marcy Park this Saturday night. A dozen two-stage "guided missiles" — miniature versions of the military variety — were purchased for the year's display. The rockets, which are guided by a long wire, drop their tail sections halfway through the flight, while the nose cone continues to an explosive climax.
