May 9, 1908: The New Mexico Central will be the name of a railroad which will result from the merger of the Santa Fe Central and Albuquerque Eastern, now under consideration, when it is completed.

The Jose R. Martinez residence on Upper Palace Avenue, occupied by Col. and Mrs. George W. Prichard, is being extensively repaired, renovated and painted and its sewer system has been connected with the city sewer.

Peach twig borers will become a problem in New Mexico within the next three to four weeks, according to County Agent J.R. Chavez. The twig borers can be controlled if the peach trees and stone fruits are sprayed when the fruit is between one-half and three-fourth of an inch in diameter. Usually there are three or four generations of these worms a year. Use DDT spray at the rate of two pounds of wettable powder to each 100 gallons of water.

May 9, 1983: Washington — The average married worker with two children will take home an extra $2.40 a week when the final share of President Reagan's tax cut begins showing up in paychecks July 1. The figures, from new tables prepared by the Internal Revenue Service, are for a married person making what the Labor Department defines as the median wage — $319 a week.

Washington — Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell said today that the death penalty should be abolished if Congress and the courts can't find a way to prevent seemingly endless delays in carrying out executions. The current system permits repeated review of death sentences, clogging the courts and causing years of anxiety for those sentenced to die, Powell said.
