Postmaster Burke has just received notice from the postal department at Washington of the efforts being made by Uncle Sam to have letters and papers delivered with greater dispatch.
September 6, 1960: A report charging that 'horrifying' education conditions in Taos and Rio Arriba counties is handicapping children of the area drew an angry rebuttal from educators today, and a debate challenge from the Taos superintendent. Joe L. Otero, superintendent of Taos city schools, said the report made by Dr. John Burma for Northern New Mexico College and the Ford Foundation 'has angered a good many people up here.' 'I have not met Dr. Burma, nor as far as I know has he ever visited our schools. I cannot see how he could evaluate our school program, our teachers and our administrators without spending some time here to get acquainted with our work,' Otero said.
September 6, 1985: Detroit — When it comes to auto recalls, the Environmental Protection Agency usually goes after moving targets. But General Motors Corp. has handed the agency a sitting duck: cars the EPA says pollute while at rest. The EPA said that it had ordered GM to recall 82,000 cars from the 1981 model year because gasoline fumes escape from the fuel system when the cars are standing still with the engine off.
