Sept. 27, 1911: At exactly 10 minutes after 8, the Lusitania "lifted anchor" this morning and midst the shriek of whistles, the cheers of passengers and the waving of pennants, steamed south. The Lusitania was filled with delegates to the first state Republican Convention, which meets tomorrow at Las Vegas to put a full ticket in the field. The Lusitania, by the way, is the Pullman car chartered by the delegates and enthusiasts and was hitched to the Lamy train, which carried in its parlor car and day coach fully 100 passengers, many of them Las Vegas bound.
Sept. 27, 1961: If the city of Santa Fe is ever evacuated under orders from the president or the governor, Santa Feans will be directed either to Taos or Las Vegas. The evacuation plan is included in a thorough "Operational Survival Plan" drawn up by the city's civil defense director, Lt. Col. John R. Hardesty. The plan will be presented to the city council at its meeting this evening at 7:30.
Sept. 27, 1986: The prison system will be full by December 1988 even if the state is allowed to put two prisoners to a cell, says Corrections Secretary Michael Francke. Without putting two inmates to a cell — "double-celling" — the state's prisons will be full by the end of next year. In a presentation spanning more than three hours, Francke painted a dreary financial and operational picture if the Legislature reacts to public pressure to crack down on criminals but doesn't increase available prison beds.
