May 23, 1911: About 50 people were in Santa Fe Canyon yesterday fishing. Others went in automobiles as far as the Dalton switchbacks and regretted that the switchbacks have not been cleared of the small slides that obstruct the way although other vehicles have been to the top this spring. On the top there is a magnificent automobile speedway of some 10 miles down to the Dalton Canyon and the head of the Indian Creek Trail. The road to Monument rock is in good condition.
Leo Hersch and family yesterday made the trip to Espanola in an hour and 50 minutes in their new car. Frank Horn was chauffeur and crossed the Rio Grande with the auto. Although he water was up to the mudguards, no mishap occurred. A stop was made at Santa Cruz where Mr. and Mrs. Hersch visited relatives.
May 23, 1961: An 18-month-old boy was apparently beaten to death in his Questa home late yesterday and authorities said the child's stepfather has signed a statement admitting that he struck and kicked the tot because he 'wouldn't stop crying.'
May 23, 1986: Washington — A ban on smoking in most areas of federal buildings starting this fall was proposed Thursday by the government's housekeeping agency. The General Services Administration called both health and annoyance to non-smokers in publishing its proposal. 'Smoking has begun to infringe on the health interests of non-smokers in the workplace. 'No longer is it the right of the individual to smoke without regard for the health concerns of those who work in the same area,' said GSA Administrator Terence C. Golden in remarks prepared for a conference on public employee fitness and health.
Police are warning elderly women against a male telephone caller who is asking to come into their homes to take samples of their drinking water. The man, who has harassed several women this week, claims to represent the Sangre de Cristo Water Co., which only conducts services upon request and not over the telephone.
