November 16, 1909: Good Roads Engineer J.D. Merriweather went to Las Vegas yesterday with 15 more convicts, swelling the total number to 40 on the Scenic Highway up Gallinas canyon.

November 16, 1959: Jack Bogue, 33, Isabel St., doesn't know what to think. Bogue was dumping trash north of town Saturday afternoon when two men and a youngster ran to him for help. They said another teenager had been accidentally shot while rabbit hunting. Bogue then and there disconnected his small trailer and rushed the youth to St. Vincent Hospital. While he was gone to the hospital, someone stole his trailer. "I don't know whether to call police, or not," said Bogue. "It might be that someone is saving it for me and will get in touch with me."

November 16, 1984: Loma Linda Calif. — Baby Fae, the month-old infant who received a baboon's heart to replace her own congenitally deformed one, died Thursday night, almost three weeks after undergoing her historic operation. Her parents were with her as much as possible during this period and are receiving support from chaplains and physicians.

The sweet smell of educational success emanates from science teacher Betty Graham's room at E.J. Martinez Elementary School. The aroma — from the menagerie of guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, fish and doves stashed in the corner of the eclectically decorated classroom — hits a visitor heavily in the nose upon first entry. After several minutes, the smell becomes unnoticeable, though, as the pageantry of the education process unfolds. Graham, a 19-year veteran in the teaching field, turns on kids like most people click on light switches. Besides teaching five science classes, the Artesia native and Highlands University graduate sponsors three science clubs that have been overwhelming successes. Her key to success with children? A fine blend of discipline coupled with the freedom for students to try things. Says Graham: I will come down on them and then give them the rope to hang themselves again.
