September 4, 1960: A specialist on Spanish-speaking people reports that a "horrifying" education situation in Taos and Rio Arriba Counties is dooming over half of the area's children to be "the hewers of wood and drawers of water." The report reports that less than half of the youngsters in the two counties attain a high school education and charges that schools are crippled by politics and other factors.

September 4, 1985: A former Santa Fe police officer was paid $100,000 by the city of Santa Fe in an out-of-court settlement of a lawsuit she filed after she lost her job. She and three other police officers quit or were fired after an internal investigation into alleged drug use. In a federal lawsuit filed nearly a year ago, she disputed the action taken against her, saying she was unjustly forced out of her job, was denied a hearing and was told that she would be fired if she didn't take a lie detector test.
