July 31, 1960: Española — Española Valley farmers are about ready to market the cash crops of chili and sweet corn they planted in abundance this year to offset in part the $1 million loss they suffered when late spring frosts destroyed the fruit crop. The sweet corn and green chili will be ready to hit the market within 10 days to two weeks.

July 31, 1985: Legislators said that construction problems at the new prison south of Santa Fe have eroded public confidence in government. The new prison is falling apart. People in government should be monitoring the project. Somebody somewhere dropped the ball. The state hired a construction management firm to oversee the project, but when building went beyond the original completion date, inspection work was contracted to the project designers. There's a lot of buck passing in the system. Some state contracts cannot be enforced because enforcement clauses were left out.
