July 30, 1910: Spending too much time in saying good-bye to the young women they met in Santa Fe caused a number of Las Vegas young men to miss the excursion train, which pulled out of the Capital City exactly at 7 o'clock. Also, Juan Roybal, who works in the Ludwig Ilfeld hardware store, reached the station just as the train was gaining headway. He chased after it in record-breaking style for a distance of nearly two blocks. Friends who were watching from the rear platform say he stumbled over a jackrabbit which he overtook; otherwise he would have caught the train. Atanacio Tafoya, the second-fattest man on the train, got hungry at Lamy, although he ate two square meals while in Santa Fe. He got off to get a sandwich and the train pulled out and left him. — Las Vegas Optic.
July 30, 1985: For most people, no price is too high to pay for the return of a loved one, but fewer people would spend as much for a pet. Marion Gonzalez, who has lived in Santa Fe for 42 years, is among the numbered few. She has spent more than $1,000 to find her 4-year-old cat. Her yard was vandalized the night he disappeared and she figured her cat went with the people involved. She is offering a $500 reward with no questions asked for the pet.
