Today offers an opportunity to celebrate — with the Santa Fe Community Foundation's Piñon Awards singling out innovation that makes a difference in all our lives.

Now in its 30th anniversary year, the community foundation is a place that brings together the people and groups that want to help care for Santa Fe. Every year, with its Piñon Awards, the foundation takes time to honor the groups that are leading the way to a better community.

This year, honored groups are Southwest CARE Center, The Santa Fe Alliance, New Mexico Environmental Law Center and the Santa Fe Mountain Center. The ceremony gets going at 6 p.m. at the Lensic Performing Arts Center; it's free and open to the public.

Southwest CARE Center — winner of the Courageous Innovation Award — is being honored for an HIV-prevention campaign targeting young, gay Hispanic males. The slogan, Es Mejor Saber (It's Better to Know) helps emphasize the message that it is quick and simple to be tested.

Santa Fe Alliance — Visionary Award winner — is the group that reminds us all about the benefits of shopping local. The alliance is now the third-largest independent business alliance in the country. (The New Mexican is a member.)

The New Mexico Environmental Law Center — honored for the Quiet Inspiration Award — has been working to protect the land, water and air since 1987. Whether helping Picuris Pueblo fight off a mica mine or working with traditional water rights owners to protect their acequias, the law center is an important player in giving a voice to those who otherwise might lack power.

Finally, the Santa Fe Mountain Center — Tried & True Award winner — helps educate through experiences and adventure. Whether with the Native community, lesbian, gay and transgender individuals, or victims of violence, the mountain center is a place that helps people grow stronger and more resilient.

There's even a bit of suspense tonight — the winner of the community foundation's Philanthropic Leadership Award won't be announced until the actual event.

Congratulations, Piñon Award winners. It's good once again to reflect upon the many ways we can help each other.
