Let's step back and evaluate technology
5/9/2008 - 5/9/08
To envision our lives without microwave technology is almost incomprehensible. Even a slight cutback in technologies, such as car phones, is a threat to many. Perhaps that's why it's easier to make fun of the "messengers" than to pursue thoughtful analysis, careful policy, a reasoned story. As with oil and gas, our lives have become so rewarded and dependent on this industry, that it's hard to step back and consider the harm that may be occurring.
I listened to a homeowners' board recently endorse more cell towers/antennas (accompanied by generous lease payments) because the "preponderance of evidence" they found on the Internet told them there was no harm.
I have listened to people who have studied the harder-to-access scientific literature. They find clear and convincing evidence that people and other species are harmed by this radiation and technology.
This issue deserves an intelligent look, not simplistic ranting and attack on concerned people, many already injured.

Start at home
The May 5 letter, "Don't just cover graffiti; fight it," states that "despite their best efforts, the city, police and cover-up crews are completely unable to do anything about the graffiti problem in Santa Fe."
While overstated, the argument has some merit. Walls around town are a patchwork of different colors where obvious attempts at covering graffiti have been made. But the problem is everyone's responsibility; the solution begins with strong family structures that instill a sense of respect in our city's youth for their community.
Tagging and graffiti are sure signs of disrespect. Communities support families through all kinds of programs, but these require community participation. People need to be involved with their neighbors and not rely solely on city services to solve problems. Involvement in a Neighborhood Watch program, a neighborhood association and the school district is essential, if we wish to see less graffiti around town. The solution starts at home.

Gather at the river
I just heard on National Public Radio that Hillary Rodham Clinton is staying in the race until the nomination. I know now why I voted for Barack Obama in the state Democratic presidential caucus.
We certainly do not need another president who is in denial!

For world's sake
The future of the world may depend on whether the U.S. Senate signs the Climate Security Act S. 2191. Please call as many senators as possible over the next few weeks before June (www.senate.gov) and tell them saving the future might be a good thing and support the act. Reduce global warming and we inherit a better future. Salvaging posterity for children might just be more important than the coal and oil companies profits, and the impetus has to be taken by the people of this country — now!
This is the new Declaration of Independence for the future of the world and all life. The image of landing on the moon did little to our consciousness. Perhaps a burning and thirsting planet and a drowning planet will. Whether we like it or not.
