At Santa Fe Opera, a superb season begins
As if the national economic downturn weren't challenge enough, the Santa Fe Opera opens tonight amid an early beginning to our region's rainy season.
But it's sounding as if SFO, and new general director Charles MacKay are up to the task: After all, this will be the twelfth season in its new, not-so-open-to-the-elements building, so if the skies threaten this evening, the real threat would be to the tailgate parties in the parking lot. That's no small matter: For Santa Feans and operagoers from around the world, a light repast and a dab of wine under sapphire skies is a big part of this renowned seasonal festival.

A clean-car victory for N.M., nation
We figured all along that there was more than one way to skin the car-emissions cat: Even as we applauded New Mexico's environment secretary and attorney general for joining California's lawsuit seeking state power to set auto-exhaust standards, we couldn't help thinking Congress and the Environmental Protection Agency were better places to settle the state-federal issue.

July 3, 1959: Every tourist who enters New Mexico on two major highways during the 4th of July weekend will get a personal explanation and warning of the state's soaring traffic fatality toll. State Police Chief A.P. Winston Jr. announced the establishment of courtesy check points starting at dawn Friday at Anthony and Lordsburg on U.S. 80 and at San Jon and Gallup on U.S. 66. He said various state departments would cooperate in stopping all non-resident traffic at those points during the next three days.
City Clerk-Treasurer Marion Sebastian was named early today as acting city manager for Santa Fe. Sebastian was appointed by Mayor Leo T. Murphy to fill the post left vacant by the sudden death of Howard Ashbaugh last week.

Give young drivers a 'brake,' Santa Fe
I am a concerned mom trying to teach my son to drive. He's just completed two weeks of driver's ed and has logged more than eight hours of driving on his learner's permit. But it's extremely difficult to learn to drive in this town.
This morning as we approached a green light to make a left turn, my son was driving and asked, "Should I go or ... »Read more letters

The circle will be unbroken
Charles MacKay became Santa Fe Opera's third general director on Oct. 1, 2008. Looked at one way, that means he'll have been on the job just 276 days when the 2009 season opens on Friday, July 3. On the other hand, there's an excellent case to be made that MacKay has been preparing for this position, sometimes on the job, for quite a bit longer. Try 40-some years. »Story
Physics of pancakes
Something happened to buttermilk pancakes between the 1960s, when I was a kid, and today, when I can't seem to find or make a pancake that doesn't dissolve into a mealy mush before I'm halfway through the stack. »Story
