The race for a Public Regulation Commission seat in northern New Mexico may not be a free ride after all for the Democrat who was nominated a week ago.

A Green Party candidate, Rick Lass, says he is running for the seat.

Lass filed paperwork with the secretary of state on Wednesday saying he intends to use public financing for the race.

He must collect about 1,400 signatures during the next couple of weeks to secure his spot on the Nov. 4 general election ballot.

The day for minor party candidates to file for the general election is June 24.

Democrat Jerome Block Jr. won the Democratic nomination for the PRC District 3 seat. There is no Republican on the ballot.

The image is iconic in contemporary political art. And it's been inside your head for more than a year. Art critic Peter Schjeldahl of The New Yorker has referred to it as "the most efficacious American political illustration since 'Uncle Sam Wants You.'" The image was designed by Los Angeles street artist Shepard Fairey in 2008. »Story
