What's the Super Bowl without good friends? That's the premise behind Saturday's special event at the Española Valley Humane Society.

The shelter, 108 Hamm Parkway, will be decked out in Super Bowl regalia for Pet Bowl 2010, said Nina Chiotassa, who handles the shelter's community relations. There also will be plenty of nachos and sodas for the event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

More than 100 highly adoptable companion animals are also invited to partake in the festivities. Many will be wearing special gold-colored dog tags, which, when adopted, come with special prizes, such as free training, pet food or collars and leashes.

Those who wear football jerseys to the event will also get $10 off on any adoption. The team doesn't matter.

"We want folks to come out and pick a friend to watch the game with," Chiotasso said. While dogs might be indifferent to the game, which is broadcast on Sunday, they do enjoy hanging out with their human.

The shelter's cats are also invited to get into the football mood, although they will do it without football jerseys — at their request, Chiotasso said.

The shelter is especially full, so organizers are hoping for a good turnout, along with matching pets with families. The football extravaganza is the first of several aimed at drawing more people to the shelter, Chiotasso said. The in-house adoption fairs help reduce travel stress on animals and give shelter staff and volunteers a chance to share animal-welfare education with the community.

Forget the cat prowl. The High Desert Cat Walk, a special cat show meant to draw feline lovers into the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society, has been canceled because of a lack of entries.

But that doesn't mean cats will be forgotten at the shelter, organizers said. The event, part of the shelter's Moving Forward for Felines initiative, is likely to go online. Details have yet to be worked out, but it's safe to get your feline photos in order.

The initiative aims to raise compassion and awareness for cats.

And speaking of feisty felines, it's finally time to do some serious shopping. The Santa Fe shelter's resale and thrift store, Look What the Cat Dragged In, is holding its grand opening from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Many people had the opportunity to preview the great selection of goods during the shelter's Holiday Bazaar, held at the same location, 2570 Camino Entrada, between Kohl's and Outback Steakhouse. It's next to the shelter's Spay, Neuter & Wellness Clinic.

There's quite a buzz about the store, and it could be because a lot of great volunteers have been devoting a lot of time to getting the store ready. The shop features fine, gently used housewares, clothes, furniture and great gifts.

To mark the special event, cat adoptions will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Gabrielle Amster, who's in charge of the store, is still collecting drop-off goods from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call the store at 474-6300 for more information.
