Laura Chavez did not pass go. She did not collect $200.

Instead, Santa Fe County Sheriff's deputies took the 60-year-old directly to jail after they say she repeatedly stabbed her boyfriend Wednesday after arguing during a game of Monopoly.

Police responded to a stabbing call at 1:21 a.m. Wednesday in the Casa Villita Apartments, 3330 Calle Po Ae Pi off Airport Road in southwest Santa Fe.

Deputy Kurt Whyte arrived at the apartment where he says he found the 48-year-old male stabbing victim, "bleeding heavily from his head and right wrist area."

Chavez, who police say admitted stabbing the man with a kitchen knife, was arrested and charged with aggravated battery on a household member with a deadly weapon, battery upon a peace officer, assault upon a peace officer and resisting or evading a police officer. She remained jailed late Wednesday in lieu of a $5,000 surety bond, according to an online jail database.

Her boyfriend, meanwhile, remained hospitalized late Wednesday but was in stable condition, according to Lt. Adan Mendoza.

Police say both Chavez and her boyfriend appeared to be intoxicated.

According to the statement of probable cause filed for Chavez's arrest drafted by Detective Andrew Quintana, Chavez and her boyfriend were playing a late Tuesday night game of Monopoly with her 10-year-old grandson. The young boy told police the couple began fighting because his grandma thought her boyfriend was cheating at the classic Parker Brothers game.

"[Victim] informed Deputy Whyte while his girlfriend Laura's apartment they were playing a board game of Monopoly," the court document states. "[The victim] stated Laura then hit him over the head with a glass bottle while sitting at the table. [The victim] stated Laura then grabbed a knife and began cutting him causing injuries to the top of his head, neck, left eyebrow and right wrist area."

Chavez told police that her boyfriend had pushed her and then she asked him to leave her apartment "and informed Deputy Whyte she may have stabbed" her boyfriend, although she also said she had no idea why she had the man's blood on her. In a later conversation with another officer, Chavez told an officer the blood was in fact from her boyfriend.

Police reports state deputies "observed large amounts of suspected blood patterns on the floor and walls of the living room and kitchen area" of the apartment, according to the probable cause statement.

Chavez's 10-year-old grandson, who was staying the night with his grandmother, told police he did not witness any physical violence between the two and was in bed at the time of the stabbing.

"[The boy] stated his grandma, Laura, and [her boyfriend] were both drinking a beer from the same can while playing the game (of Monopoly," the arrest warrant states. "[The boy] further advised that during the time they were playing the game, his grandma and [her boyfriend] started to argue because she thought [the boyfriend] was cheating at Monopoly."

The boy said he went to bed about 11 p.m. and woke up once police were in the apartment.

Investigators say they were not aware of past domestic violence calls regarding the couple, but jail records show Chavez has been booked into the Santa Fe County jail nine times since June 2006, many of which were related to violations of probation and the conditions of her release from a 2009 felony drug possession case in which she eventually received a conditional discharge.

It was unclear late Wednesday when Chavez will be arraigned on the charges filed against her.
