Half or more of the roads and trails currently open to motorized travel in the Santa Fe National Forest will be closed under a draft travel management plan released today by the agency.
People can read the plan and the four alternatives at the Santa Fe National Forest
website. The final version of the plan will create a map designating a system of roads and trails open to trucks, four-wheelers, dirt bikes and other motorized vehicles on 1.6 million acres of forest land.
All national forests are required to create the so-called travel management plans to control the impacts of motorized vehicles on natural resources.
In addition, Daniel J. Jirón, supervisor of the 1.6 million acre
Santa Fe National Forest has been promoted to deputy regional forest supervisor for the Pacific Southwest Region. Jiron will oversee 18 national forests in his new position. Jiron accepted the Santa Fe National Forest supervisor's job in December, 2006.
Deputy forest supervisor Erin Connelly will be the acting supervisor until a permanent replacement is found.
