Police say death likely a homicide
A man found dead in a south-side apartment late Saturday had been shot and the death is being investigated as a homicide, a sheriff's spokesman said Sunday.
Santa Fe County Undersheriff Robert Garcia said an autopsy showed that the man, believed to be about 40, died from a fatal gunshot wound. His identity has not been released, nor was the location of the wound on the body.
Authorities also have not identified any possible suspects.
Deputies discovered the body after they had been summoned to the Cedar Crest Apartments on Airport Road by a resident who said she had found a bullet hole in a wall of her apartment. The victim was found in an adjacent apartment on the other side of the wall, Garcia said.
The shooting was still being investigated Sunday, and a search warrant had been obtained for the apartment.
Teague: Expand Rail Runner service
LAS CRUCES — Rep. Harry Teague said it's time for the Rail Runner to reach El Paso, Texas.
Teague, D-N.M., spoke Saturday on efforts to extend Rail Runner service into southern New Mexico and El Paso. Currently, it runs in central New Mexico from Belen to Santa Fe.
Las Cruces residents toured a Rail Runner train during the city's Railroad Days celebration.
Last week, Teague introduced legislation that he said would ease congestion and conserve energy for southern New Mexico commuters.
He has proposed a feasibility study to look into additional public transportation options between Las Cruces and El Paso, along with a study to extend the Rail Runner south from Belen to El Paso with stops in between.
Obama to visit Rio RanchoALBUQUERQUE — President Barack Obama will hold a town hall Thursday at Rio Rancho High School, where he is expected to discuss his efforts to stop credit card companies from taking advantage of consumers.
Obama used his weekend radio and Internet address to outline proposed reforms. He challenged congressional leaders to send him legislation to enact the changes, but the banking industry is resisting.
"Americans know that they have a responsibility to live within their means and pay what they owe," Obama said Saturday. "But they also have a right to not get ripped off by the sudden rate hikes, unfair penalties and hidden fees that have become all too common."
Obama plans to fly into Albuquerque late Wednesday, then attend the Thursday town hall in Rio Rancho from 10 to 11:15 a.m.
It will be his first trip to New Mexico since his election last fall. He won the state's five electoral votes.
"New Mexicans continue to get signals about how important they are and how important it is for the administration to connect with Main Street," New Mexico Democratic Party chairman Brian Colón said.
The White House said space in Rio Rancho is limited. Tickets are available but members of the public who are interested in attending must apply through a Web site or telephone number, and spaces will be randomly assigned.
