A Rio Arriba County Sheriff's deputy who allegedly robbed a pharmacy at gunpoint Monday morning before holding police at bay for several hours had enough time to change clothes before police arrived, but couldn't escape because he had locked himself out of his truck.

A woman who said she was employee at an office adjacent to Del Norte Pharmacy and Home Medical left phone a message at The New Mexican Tuesday saying the alleged robber, Brian Vigil, had "dropped his clothes off in the bathroom trash can" in her office.

"I asked him if he was a patient," said the woman, who couldn't be reached for further comment. "He was standing there in a big daze and I kind of closed the door on him. I didn't lock it, though, because I didn't know what was happening outside until later. Then I guess he ran to his truck, and his truck keys were locked inside the truck."

Santa Fe Police Captain Gary Johnson confirmed Vigil's pants had been found in a trash can at Rehabilitation Medicine Associates of New Mexico, the next building over from the pharmacy on Galisteo Street at Harkle Road.

Johnson said he believed Vigil was wearing "gym shorts" when he was arrested in a field near the pharmacy several hours later. He said he didn't know what kind of pants Vigil had left in the bathroom.

Johnson also confirmed Vigil had locked himself out of his truck and was in the bed of the truck when officers first came on scene. Police found a cloth in the back of the blue Dodge pickup, which they suspect Vigil used to cover his face when he held up the pharmacy, Johnson said.

Brian Vigil was arraigned Tuesday in Magistrate Court on charges of robbery, tampering with evidence and five counts of possession of a controlled substance in connection with the incident. Vigil's bond was set at $500,000 cash only, according to Johnson.
