Update: Suspect in homicide case, Jaime Carrera, turned himself in to law enforcement authorities Tuesday around 1 p.m., police said.

An 18-year-old fugitive who allegedly shot and killed another Santa Fe teen at a party early Sunday has a history of violence and was twice committed to state custody, court records show.

Santa Fe police detectives on Monday continued their search for Jaime Carrera and alerted U.S. Border Patrol officials because they believe he might try to flee to Mexico.

The department's Crime Stoppers program offered a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to Carrera's capture.

Santa Fe police for a second day refused to release the name of the 17-year-old whom Carrera allegedly shot once in the chest just after 3 a.m. at a home in the 900 block of Calle Carmelita. However, a state Children, Youth and Families Department spokeswoman identified the dead teen as Edward Herrera of Santa Fe.

Like Carrera, Herrera's record showed several referrals to the Juvenile Probation Office beginning when he was 14, Romaine Serna of CYFD said. Unlike Carrera, however, Herrera never faced charges in court, according to court records.

Police have said Carrera is affiliated with the Sureños gang. Serna said Herrera also was affiliated with a gang, though she didn't know which one.

Carrera first appeared in Children's Court in August 2006, when he was charged with aggravated battery with a rock, conspiracy, aggravated assault and being a minor under the influence of alcohol, court records show. Two months later, he again was charged with battery with a rock.

Carrera admitted to the aggravated battery and battery charges in March 2007 and was sentenced to two years probation by District Judge Barbara Vigil, records state. Among other conditions, he was ordered to get anger management counseling, according to the records.

He was arrested again in October 2007 and charged with resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia. A month later, he admitted to the possession charge — the resisting-arrest charge was dropped — and Vigil sentenced him to a year in CYFD custody, according to court records.

Carrera was paroled to his grandparents in July 2008 and ordered to have no contact with gang members, records state. While on parole, he allegedly used marijuana and cocaine, was suspended from Capital High School, disregarded his curfew and repeatedly ditched school, according to a parole report in court records. A probation officer also worried about a lack of parental supervision.

He was arrested again in December 2008 and charged with assault with intent to commit robbery and aggravated battery — both in connection with a woman. He admitted to both charges in February 2009, and Vigil sentenced him to another year in CYFD custody.

Serna said Carrera was paroled again Nov. 13. Less than two months later — on Jan. 1 — he was arrested by Santa Fe County sheriff's deputies on a charge of possession of alcohol by a minor, she said.

Three days after that, state police issued a warrant for his arrest for battery on a police officer, Serna said. That charge came about because Carrera allegedly assaulted a juvenile corrections officer a year ago during a brawl at the Youth Diagnostic and Development Center campus in Albuquerque, she said.

At that point, he was placed back in the Bernalillo County juvenile jail until he finished his year sentence, which ended Feb. 12, Serna said.

Police have said the argument at a party, where alcohol and marijuana were present, took place over a girl.

A news release Monday from Santa Fe police — who have obtained a murder arrest warrant for Carrera — said they believe he is armed with a .40-caliber handgun and is dangerous. He is 5 feet tall, 110 pounds and has brown eyes and brown hair.

Anyone with information about Carrera's whereabouts can call Santa Fe police at 428-3710, or anonymously leave a Crime Stoppers tip at 955-5050.
