State police said Wednesday that alcohol and failure to wear seat
belts were contributing factors in a rollover accident near Chama that
left two people dead.
Joe Valdez, 45, of Dulce and Charlene Gonzales, 38, of Albuquerque
were killed when a 1988 Ford Ranger pulling a camper trailer crashed
Tuesday afternoon on N.M. 112.
They were ejected along with a third occupant, 49-year-old Anthony
Montoya, who was taken to Española Valley Medical Center for treatment
following the accident.
A statement issued by a police spokesman said investigators were
still trying to determine who was driving the vehicle, and the state
Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque planned to conduct
autopsies on Gonzales and Valdez, who were pronounced dead at the
scene.
The vehicle drifted off the roadway "for an unknown reason," the
statement said, then crossed back onto eastbound lanes, causing the
vehicle and trailer to jackknife. The trailer subsequently broke loose,
and the pickup rolled.
