A Vincent Van Gogh drawing stolen from a Santa Fe home in May was recovered Thursday from a consignment shop in Raton, where it was on sale for $250, police said.

Detectives also found a significant amount of other artwork stolen from the home, said Sgt. Jason Wagner of the Santa Fe Police Department. However, Wagner didn't have many details of the recovery because detectives were still investigating the case. He did say the consignment shop, which he didn't know the name of, was not suspected of being involved in the theft.

FBI spokesman Stephan Marshall said a Santa Fe agent assigned to the case received information Wednesday that someone had acquired a piece of art from the shop that had been stolen from the Santa Fe home. The agent and Santa Fe police detectives thought the 14- by 17-inch charcoal Van Gogh drawing also might be at the shop and were there Thursday morning when it opened.

Sure enough, it was there, Marshall said.

Attempts to track down anyone at the Raton shop Thursday were not successful. The Santa Fe owner of the artwork didn't return a phone call Thursday seeking comment.

No arrests have yet been made in the case, Wagner said.

The Van Gogh drawing was a sketch for the artist's later painting, The Night Café. The black-and-white drawing looks exactly like the finished painting, except the drawing doesn't have Van Gogh's signature, the owner told The New Mexican in August.

Police estimated the drawing was worth about $200,000 in August, though the owner said that number was far below the work's value and "not even remotely accurate."

The owner said his great-grandfather originally bought the drawing and that it had been in his family for three generations.

The drawing was one of 77 items taken from the man's home on the city's northeast side in May, according to a police report. The items included numerous oil paintings by the homeowner, who is an artist, as well as sculptures from Africa and New Guinea, vintage musical instruments, 15th-century spears and swords, jewelry, electronics and Persian silk rugs.
