More than 100 ice skaters from New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Texas — including 17 youth, teen and adult skaters from Santa Fe — will compete for medals and skate for fun during the fifth annual Skate Fest/Fun Fest next weekend.

Sponsored by the Santa Fe Skating Club, the event will be conducted under the rules of the U.S. Figure Skating Association, according to Nancy Yankura and Eumie Stroukoff, event co-chairpersons and judges.

Twelve other judges will be on hand from Albuquerque, California, Colorado, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. On Saturday morning, Skate Fest participants will vie for standing in compulsory moves, spins and short programs; Saturday evening's competition will include free skating, dance and artistic programs.

"Fun Fest, which will be Sunday morning, is just as the name implies," Yankura said. "It is open to beginning skaters of all ages, who will skate for fun and not be judged on their abilities. In fact, each participant in Fun Fest will receive a medal."

In addition to the skaters from outside Santa Fe, Yankura expects more than 100 family members, coaches and friends to attend the event.

The event is free, as is admission to the community center for those who attend.
