Volunteer searchers coordinated by the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Posse will be looking this weekend again for Mel Nadel, 61, the hunter who disappeared Sept. 6 from a hunting camp near Elk Mountain in the Pecos Wilderness.
Eric Roybal, a Pecos Wilderness guide, coordinated a search last weekend and said they are hoping to have an even larger search Sept. 26-27. "We need volunteers to assist with this search especially people experienced in searches, people that have search dogs and people that know the area where Mel was last seen," Roybal said.
They will be targeting areas that are particularly rough and where Nadel, if he was disoriented or panicked, might have gone.
Roybal said he's worried time is running out to find any clues about Nadel's whereabouts. "Once three to four inches of snow accumulate up there in the high country it will be hard to see any evidence," Roybal said.
The official state police search was called off Sept. 12. Volunteer searchers, family and friends have continued to look for Nadel since then.
Roybal said people who decide to join the search must assume responsibility for themselves and come prepared with cold and wet weather gear, food, water, maps and emergency supplies. The search is at an altitude of at least 11,000 feet.
The search will begin 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Nadel's campsite.
Volunteers are asked to meet at Tererro General Store, approximately 18 miles north of Pecos on N.M. 63, on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 8 a.m. From this point, volunteers can car pool to the site if they choose. Volunteers will leave Tererro General Store promptly at 8:30 a.m. in order to be on site to begin the search at 10 a.m. The road to the site from Tererro is rough, and muddy and in most cases will require a four-wheel drive vehicle. The UTM coordinates for the camp are 13 448493E, 3959473N. It takes about 2-1/2 hours to reach the camp from Santa Fe.
