A domestic dispute turned deadly late Friday night, ending with the arrest of a 38-year-old man on an open count of murder after his girlfriend was found shot in the head in the Santa Fe home they shared.

Mark Kelly called 911 at 11:49 p.m. Friday and reported a shooting at 2090 Avenida de las Alturas, said Santa Fe Deputy Police Chief Benjie Montaño. Police arrived at the house off Llano Street and found Julia Ostercamp, 32, dead of a single gunshot wound, he said.

Montaño said the couple had been fighting but he didn't know what the dispute was about. Detectives handling the case did not say drugs or alcohol were involved, Montaño said. No one else was in the house as far as Montaño knew.

Police found a handgun at the home, Montaño said. Detectives have spoken to Kelly, who was booked into the Santa Fe County jail at 11 a.m. Saturday, according to online jail records and Montaño.

Julia Jaye Ostercamp played flute and trombone in her Boise, Idaho, high school band, according to her father Robert Ostercamp, who lives in Texas. His daughter had moved to Santa Fe only a year ago and was working at Home Depot, he said.

Ostercamp's death marks the city's fourth homicide of the year.

The circle will be unbroken

Charles MacKay became Santa Fe Opera's third general director on Oct. 1, 2008. Looked at one way, that means he'll have been on the job just 276 days when the 2009 season opens on Friday, July 3. On the other hand, there's an excellent case to be made that MacKay has been preparing for this position, sometimes on the job, for quite a bit longer. Try 40-some years. »Story

CENTRAL NEVADA TEST AREA, Nev. — At the center of a desolate valley in the middle of Nevada, more than a dozen miles from the nearest paved road, one of the few signs of human activity is a rusty steel well casing that juts oddly out of the desert floor. »Story
