Every year, the five Santa Fe County commissioners allot themselves $30,000 each from the county's general fund to spend in their districts as they see fit over the course of the year.

The amount used to be $40,000 apiece, but was reduced this year in light of other budget cuts at the county.

Next year, the amount will be further reduced to $28,500, according to county Finance Director Teresa Martinez. All expenditures of "Community Funds" (formerly called Discretionary Funds) must be approved by the full commission.

The following expenditures were approved at Tuesday's commission meeting:
  • $2,000 for playground equipment in the town of Edgewood (Commissioner Michael Anaya).
  • $2,000 to fund athletic programs in Moriarty (Commissioner Michael Anaya).
  • $1,000 for the Santa Fe Farmer's Market Institute's fall fiesta (Commissioner Liz Stefanics).
  • $1,000 for the annual Binational Policy Forum on Migration and Health to be held at Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino (Commissioner Liz Stefanics).
  • $1,000 for the annual Binational Policy Forum on Migration and Health to be held at Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino (Commissioner Kathleen Holian).
  • $5,000 for Girls Inc. programing (Commissioner Liz Stefanics).
  • $600 for advertising Santa Fe County programs in the online newspaper The Pojoaque News (Commissioner Harry Montoya).
  • $800 for the Leadership Santa Fe Program of the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce (Commissioner Kathleen Holian).
  • $500 for the Pojoaque Schools Key to Success Scholarship program (Commissioner Harry Montoya).
