With roads snow-packed and icy Friday morning following an overnight snowfall of several inches, there were many minor fender-bender type accidents but none involving injuries, Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano said.
"The delays helped a lot," he said, referring to the closure of schools Friday in Santa Fe and the two-hour delay for government workers.
A state police dispatcher in Española reported snow-packed and icy roads throughout the region.
"They just closed Paseo de Oñate" in Española because of the ice, he said shortly before 9 a.m. Friday.
State police were investigating three accidents, one involving a Jaguar that overturned, another a semi-trailer that high-centered, that happened on N.M. 68 south of Pilar.
"They all occurred (Thursday) night," the dispatcher said "There were no drivers around" Friday morning.
Lt. Eric Garcia said three jack-knifed semi-trailers resulted in the closure of Interstate 25 between San Felipe Pueblo and Santa Fe Friday morning. But the road has since been reopened.
Garcia also said there were "numerous motorist assists" as a result of drivers sliding off the roadways or running out of fuel. "There were no injuries of any kind."
With the hazardous road conditions and road closures, motorists should remember to fill their gas tanks and top off their windshield fluid, Garcia recommended .
"We had complaints from some people that they ran out of gas because of the back up in traffic and when the roadways were shut down," he said.
