You'll have a new way to cross the Santa Fe River beginning this afternoon.
The Siler Road Bridge opens at 3 p.m. today after a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony that begins at 2 p.m.
The 252-foot-long, 49-foot-wide concrete-beam bridge is part of about a half-mile of new road linking Agua Fría and West Alameda streets.
The bridge includes two driving lanes, two 5-foot shoulders or bike lanes, plus sidewalks on both sides.
A new roundabout has been built where Siler Road intersects with West Alameda. The existing traffic signal will remain at the new four-way intersection at Siler and Agua Fría.
"We're not 100 percent finished with the project," said Desirae Lujan, the project manager. "This is actually called substantial completion and what that means is we're not holding traffic anymore."
She said the work that will continue will include concrete work on the sidewalks, striping, cleanup and seeding of the landscaping on either side.
A.S. Horner, the city contractor, began the $4.6 million project in May. The Louis Berger Group was the engineer on the project.
About $3.6 million came from state transportation bonds, $750,000 from city impact-fee funds and $250,000 from city-county gross-receipt-tax revenues.
An additional $1.1 from city and county funds went for design and acquisition of right of way.
