The 26-year-old man found dead Saturday on or near the Pojoaque Pueblo boundary had been shot in the chin, a Santa Fe County Sheriff's Department report says.

The El Rancho resident who discovered the body in an arroyo off Santa Fe County Road 84D "noticed a large hole in the chin" of Naayaitch Friday that appeared to be result of a gunshot, the report says.

Friday — clad in a black T-shirt, black shorts, a red sweat shirt, black socks and black-and-white shoes — was on his back with a bottle of vodka between his legs, according to the report.

The FBI took over the investigation after Santa Fe County deputies determined the body was on pueblo land, the report says. On Monday, an FBI spokesman released Friday's name and the time his body was found, but refused to provide any other details.

Melynn Schuyler, executive director of YouthWorks in Santa Fe, said Tuesday that Friday — whose first name is pronounced Nai-eetch — worked on and off for her organization for about seven years. She said he was a member of the Jicarilla Apache tribe and was the father of four children with his girlfriend.

"We're all extremely crushed," Schuyler said. "There's great sadness around YouthWorks over this."

Schuyler said she didn't know the circumstances surrounding Friday's death, though she'd heard, rumors which she declined to discuss.

She described Friday as a "large, strong man" and said he was loving, happy and "really funny."

"He was everyone's best friend," Schuyler said. "When Naayaitch would appear, everyone would rush to the door to greet him. He wanted the best for everybody."

Schuyler and others at YouthWorks tried over the years to help Friday with "issues" she declined to specify, but said no one was able to "fully and totally help him."

Schuyler said one of her staff members saw Friday last week, and he said he had an 8-month-old baby and was going to come by the YouthWorks offices and say hello. YouthWorks is taking up a collection for Friday's family.
