A Mexican fugitive accused of homicide was arrested Thursday morning after an investigation by the U.S. Marshal's Service led to his capture in Santa Fe.
The suspect, Roberto Fierro Alanis, 45, was living in Santa Fe for an undisclosed period of time when he was arrested after leaving his home in the 6400 block of Vuelta Aventura in a green mini van, said Undersheriff Robert Garcia. The arrest was made without incident shortly after 11 a.m. when Fierro Alanis was stopped at the corner of Agua Fría Street and St. Francis Drive, Garcia said.
Drew Koschny, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshal's Office, said Fierro Alanis is wanted in connection with a Durango, Mexico, homicide in September 2008. The U.S. Marshal's Office in Los Angeles contacted the Santa Fe office with a lead that indicated Fierro Alanis was residing here, Koschny said. The Mexican government had a warrant out for his arrest. Because Fierro Alanis is undocumented, he is under Immigration and Customs Enforcement's custody and will soon be turned over to Mexican authorities.
After months of following Fierro Alanis' leads, the Marshals office involved the Santa Fe Sheriff's Department and the New Mexico State Probation and Parole division to assist with the arrest, Koschny said.
