A 17-year-old Santa Fe youth was shot to death by another male teenager early Sunday during an argument over a girl at party "fueled by alcohol and marijuana," Santa Fe police said.
Deputy Chief Abram Anaya said the victim, who was not identified pending notification of family, was shot once in the chest shortly after 3 a.m. at a residence at 932 Calle Carmelita and died later at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center.
An arrest warrant on an open count of murder was issued for Jaime Carrera, 18, of Santa Fe. Officers hunted Carrera all day but were not able to find him, Anaya said. He said Carrera has a "long, violent history with the Santa Fe Police Department," but he did not elaborate.
He said Carrera just recently turned 18, and all his run-ins with the law came as a juvenile.
Anaya said the two teenagers were arguing over a girl when Carrera allegedly pulled out a .40-caliber handgun and fired once into the youth's chest.
"The scene of the shooting was a late-night party fueled by alcohol and marijuana," a police statement said. "The interaction between the suspect and the victim was sparked over a young female also present at the party."
Several witnesses identified the shooter as Carrera, a known Surenos gang member, the statement said. He is believed to be still armed with the gun, and is considered dangerous.
Police released a photo of Carrera, described as 5-foot-1 with brown eyes and brown hair, and weighing about 110 pounds. Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Carrera is asked to call the Santa Fe Police Department at 428-3710.
