The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office is searching for the driver of a vehicle that police say struck and killed a pedestrian early Wednesday in the southwest part of Santa Fe and then left the scene.

An initial incident report says William Schroeder, 50, was found in the roadway on Agua Fría Street just east of Willy Road around 1:20 a.m. with "a severe head injury." He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unclear if road conditions, speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

"Right now, we just don't know," Maj. Ken Johnson said. "There was no evidence left at the scene from the vehicle, so we don't really have a vehicle description of any kind or suspect information for the driver at this point."

Despite the lack of vehicle evidence left at the scene, Johnson said investigators are confident Schroeder was struck by a vehicle at the location he was found.

"The blood evidence is pretty clear that it happened there, we just didn't find any evidence from the vehicle that struck him," Johnson said.

Investigators believe Schroeder was walking north across Agua Fría Street when a westbound vehicle struck him. Johnson said police believe Schroeder was walking home from a friend's house in the area.

Attempts to reach relatives of Schroeder were unsuccessful Wednesday.

Investigators ask that anyone with information on the crash call the sheriff's office at 428-3720.
