Here's a roundup of the latest news from New Mexico's campaign trail. The primary election is June 3.
Senate GOP debates set: U.S. Reps. Steve Pearce and Heather Wilson are scheduled to go face to face twice next week.
On Tuesday, they will debate live on KOAT, Channel 7. The debate starts at 9 p.m. On May 30, they will debate at 7 p.m., at Sandia Resort and Casino. That will be broadcast on most channels besides KOAT.
Both Republicans seek to replace U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, a Republican who is not seeking re-election. A recent SurveyUSA poll showed the candidates are just 3 points apart, within the margin of error.
Help needed: U.S. Rep. Tom Udall is on the air with his latest ad. But his campaign says he needs more cash to keep the 60-second biographical piece up.
"Due to all the negative attacks, we've had to go up earlier than we had budgeted for — and we need your help to keep our positive ads on the air," campaign manager Amanda Cooper wrote to supporters this week.
Montoya out with first ad: Santa Fe County Commissioner Harry Montoya has added his name to the list of 3rd Congressional District candidates who have ads running on TV.
Montoya has two, 30-second spots that focus on his background and qualifications for the post. They will run on cable and on the Internet. One features him shooting hoops in an empty gym.
"Playing basketball helped me earn a college scholarship, which led me to return home to help New Mexico families," he says in the ad as he makes basket after basket.
While front-runners Ben Ray Luján and Don Wiviott have hogged much of the airwaves in the contest so far, expect Benny Shendo Jr. to have an ad out in the coming days as well. And don't rule out last-minute ads by Luján and Wiviott, given the way that campaign has been going.
Presidential visits: Things are already swinging in this swing state as far as the presidential campaign goes.
Democratic contender Barack Obama will visit New Mexico on Monday, hosting a public event in the Las Cruces area, his campaign announced. His wife, Michelle, plans to attend a $500 per person reception Tuesday at one of Gov. Bill Richardson's favorite restaurants, Yanni's Mediterranean Bar and Grill in Albuquerque. Later Tuesday, she'll attend a $1,000 per person fundraiser for her husband's campaign hosted by former Attorney General Paul Bardacke at his Santa Fe home, according to invitations to the reception events obtained by The Associated Press.
Republican candidate John McCain will participate in Memorial Day events on Monday at the New Mexico Veterans Memorial in Albuquerque, his campaign said.
On Tuesday, President Bush is scheduled to campaign for Darren White, the Republican candidate for the state's 1st Congressional District.
Campaign finance reports to be posted: Remember the campaign finance reports candidates filed May 12? Those might be online in coming days, the Secretary of State's Office said Thursday.
And the reports that are due next Thursday — if they are filed electronically — will be posted immediately, the office said.
At a news conference Thursday about preparations for the primary, office representatives said they learned from the May 12 experience that it's better to post candidate campaign finance information as it is sent to their database, not to wait to post it all at once as they did this time around.
The office angered candidates, voters and lawmakers when it said it wouldn't be able to post the May 12 filings until this coming Monday.
