There are fewer new cases of swine flu in Santa Fe than were reported a month ago.

On Monday, 41 people showed H1N1 symptoms at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center's emergency room and various clinics.

At Arroyo Chamiso Pediatric Center, 41 people were treated for the flu, while 10 people showed up at the ER.

A month earlier — on Oct. 15 — the emergency room and the clinics handled a total of 139 cases.

All of them are presumed to be swine flu, hospital spokesman Arturo Delgado said. But not everyone is being tested because the treatment is essentially the same.

"The traditional flu season has not started," Delgado added. In Santa Fe, seasonal flu shows up later in the year, he said.

Currently there are two people with swine flu who are in the hospital's intensive care unit. At the peak, three ICU beds were filled by swine flu victims.

Of the 10 people who came into Christus St. Vincent through the ER on Monday, just two were hospitalized. Many of the people admitted just stay overnight, Delgado said. The highest number of people hospitalized on a single day was eight on Oct. 17.

"The numbers are trending downward," Delgado said, but he added, "that doesn't mean we're out of the woods."

He said the hospital has received some vaccine to treat higher-risk people and those with underlying health conditions. Further supplies are on hold. Once the hospital receives a large enough shipment from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it will hold a clinic for people who want to be inoculated. But no date has been set.

The CDC reported Tuesday that influenza activity remained high in the U.S. during the week of Nov. 1-7, although visits to doctors for influenza-like illness declined slightly from the previous week. Flu-related hospitalizations and deaths continue to increase and are very high nationwide, according to the CDC Web site.
